Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP)
Platelet-rich Plasma (PRP) Injections
In recent years, doctors have learned that the body has the ability to heal itself. Platelet-rich plasma therapy is a form of regenerative medicine that harnesses and amplifies the natural growth factors found in our blood cells to help heal damaged tissue.
Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) treatments involve concentrating a patient’s own blood plasma, which is rich in platelets and growth factors, and then applying it to the skin or injecting it into targeted areas. This treatment is often used to stimulate collagen production, improve skin texture, and address various cosmetic concerns like fine lines, wrinkles, and sun damage.
The Process
- A small amount of blood is drawn from the patient’s arm.
- The blood is placed in a centrifuge, which spins the blood at high speed, separating the plasma from other blood components.
- The PRP, which is now concentrated in the plasma, is then isolated and “activated”.
- The activated PRP is applied topically or injected into the skin.
Benefits
- Stimulates collagen production: PRP contains growth factors that stimulate the production of new collagen and elastin, essential for healthy skin.
- Improves skin texture and tone: By promoting cell turnover and collagen production, PRP can improve skin texture and tone.
- Reduces fine lines and wrinkles: PRP can help to reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles.
- Addresses sun damage:
PRP can help to repair sun-damaged skin and improve its overall appearance. - May help with acne scars and other imperfections: Some studies suggest PRP can help to improve the appearance of acne scars and other skin imperfections.
Results
- PRP can be used on various areas of the body, including the face, neck, and scalp.
- Results typically become more noticeable over several weeks as collagen production increases.
- Multiple sessions may be recommended for optimal results.
- The duration of results can vary, but some treatments can last for up to two years.
