FAQs
Semaglutide is an injected prescription medication that mimics the GLP-1 human hormone which targets areas in the brain regulating appetite and food intake. Semaglutide also decreases the rate of stomach emptying which makes one feel satiated earlier and for longer periods.
Vitamin B12 is naturally found in fish, meats, and dairy products. It is used to form red blood cells (RBC) and DNA. RBC carry oxygen to tissues. A deficiency of RBC cells is called anemia. Several studies have shown that when Vitamin B12 is combined with Semaglutide, common early side effects, such as nausea and fatigue are decreased.
Clinical trials have shown an average of 15% weight loss from baseline over a period of 1 year. Two-thirds of this weight loss occurs in the first 3 to 4 months of use. Total weight loss is dependent on the starting weight, age, and gender. Weight loss usually begins at the 0.5mg/week dosage and increases with increasing dosages.
Anyone with a history of Thyroid cancer, pancreatitis, severe kidney disease, Type 1 diabetes, uncontrolled depression, or those with suicidal thoughts, personal or family of Diabetic Retinopathy, Multiple Endocrine Neoplasia Type 2, and family history of Medullary Thyroid Carcinoma. Anyone with an allergic reaction to B12 and Semaglutide is not able to receive the injections.
Women who are pregnant and who are breastfeeding are not candidates for Semaglutide/B12 injections.
A wholesome diet of 1200 to 1800 calories per day is recommended during the period of intended weight loss.
Because alcohol can promote hypoglycemia in those taking Semaglutide, a limit of two drinks is recommended per day.
Semaglutide is cleared by the kidney and has been found to be nephroprotective and improve kidney function in patients. In rare cases, reversible mild acute renal insufficiency occurs and usually resolves in a few weeks. Semaglutide has no effect on liver function.
Side effects are mostly gastrointestinal in nature. Only 0.5% of patients in clinical trials had to withdraw due to side effects. Most side effects occur early in the first few days of the injection, nausea being the most common.
Nausea: Most common side effect. Occurs during the first 1 to 2 days of injection. More than 50% of studied patients had no nausea. Zofran (Ondansetron) 4mg or 8mg can be used to treat nausea symptoms.
Vomiting: Not common. Usually occurs in the beginning and is associated with skipping meals and then eating a large meal or eating too quickly. Zofran (Ondansetron) 4mg or 8mg can be used to treat nausea symptoms.
Constipation: Common. May be medication related or due to the reduction in food intake containing oils and fats. Can be treated with over-the-counter Miralax or Metamucil.
Diarrhea: Less Common. May sometimes occur intermittently. Treat with Imodium as needed.
Fatigue/Low Blood Sugar: Occurs from skipping meals. This can also occur in diabetics who concurrently take medications to lower their blood sugar levels. The risk of clinically significant hypoglycemia appears to be low.
Commercial health insurance does not currently cover this medication.
